Our next stage is taking us to Mompos. Back a century ago, Colombia was connected by a couple of railway lines running north-south in the interior, with the north being impassable due to rivers and flooding. Goods then traveled to the Pacific on rail, or north to the Caribbean by boat. The main centre of this boat traffic, was the city of Mompos.
We are told that it will only take an 11 hour bus ride, a change of bus and another 7 hour ride, and a 3 hour Jeep and/or boat ride to get to this “gem” of a town. The two things that we do know about this “hot and sultry” river town is that it is “known for its handworked gold jewelry” and that “Malaria is endemic in the surrounding countryside. If staying overnight, mosquito nets and/or coils are a must”…definitely a place we can’t miss…
