A short eight hour trip by collectivo (shared taxi), then river boat, and finally a small bus, and we
arrived in Cartagena... again through the “back way”. Founded in 1533, Cartagena was the main Spanish port on the Caribbean coast and gateway to the north of the continent.
Andrea had wanted to visit Cartagena since the first time she watched Michael Douglas and Kathleen in Turner in Romancing the Stone and she certainly wasn’t disappointed. The old city is
composed of numerous, narrow, cobbled streets, colonial buildings with huge balconies shrouded in bougainvillea, fabulous old churches and beautiful plazas surrounded with outdoor cafes. Add t
he elaborate wall surrounding the city and a chain of forts – all built in the 1600’s to fortify the city against further sieges - and you have a cross between Romancing the Stone and Pirates of
the Carribean. Unfortunately, the narrow streets made it difficult to get many really good shots so our photos certainly don’t do the city justice. But even the severe heat and humidity couldn’t dampen our enjoyment of the city. The highlight of course was the romantic picnic we had one evening sitting on a quiet corner of the stone wall watching the sunset and the horse drawn carriages…
